Men’s Breakfast Saturday, Aug 18th
August 18 @ 7:30 am - 8:30 am
Our monthly men’s breakfast in August will be on Saturday, Aug 18th from 7:30am to 8:30am. The menu will be French Toast casserole, sausage, fresh fruit, juice and coffee.
For the program, we are going to look at one of the many difficult sections of the Bible – the binding of Isaac, or God’s apparent command to Abraham to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22: 1–19). As you read and think about this passage, consider the following questions:
- How do you reconcile this story with your understanding of God as “love”?
- What would you have done if you were Abraham?
- Why are there such difficult sections in the Bible? What does this say about the Bible?
There are no easy answers to any of these questions, and I do not expect that we will finish the morning satisfied. It may be good to remember the story of Jacob who wrestles alone with a presence during the night (Genesis 32: 22-32) and is left with a bad hip and a new name, “Israel” meaning “he struggles with God”. We are invited to struggle and engage with Scripture to deepen our relationship with God. As Rachel Evans says in the book I am reading, “If we are lucky, it will leave us with a limp.”
